Panthers’ heads benefit from bed sales

Members of North Johnston High's football team who participated in their mattress sale fundraiser show off the $2,560 check they received from the sale. The funds will help pay for new, safer helmets for Panthers players.

— North Johnston High School’s football team put on their salesman’s caps earlier this spring to raise funds to purchase a cap of a different sort.

The Panthers sold 22 mattresses with the help of Custom Fundraising Solutions of Raleigh during a May event, raising $2,560 to fund the purchase of new football helmets for the team.

The group set up 22 mattresses, featuring Southerland Bedding and Restonic releases, in the North Johnston High gym on May 4. Players passed out referral flyers to prospective buyers and the CFS team led by Clint Stovall took over on the sales end.

“It went really well for something that we just advertised this year by word of mouth, Facebook and Twitter mentions,” said North coach Scott Meserve. “I’m somebody that’s always willing to take a chance and try something different. We needed a way to help continue our plan to update all of our helmets to the latest technology and it went great.”

North is trying to replace its older helmets with the new Riddell Revo Revolution 360 model, which are safer in testing. The challenge is each of those helmets cost between $365 and $400.

But they were worth it this past season, according to Meserve: “We didn’t have any concussions last year, so they helped our kids.”

The Panthers have already scheduled a similar event for next spring, dubbing it: buy a bed, save a head. It will be held on March 1.
