Former Johnston County teacher charged with having sex with student

— A former Johnston County teacher has been charged with having sex with a student.

The Johnston Sheriff’s Office charged Eric Lamar Minter with having sex with a 19-year-old female student at his home in Clayton while he was a teacher at Smithfield-Selma High School.

School administrators reported the alleged incident to the sheriff’s office on June 4, said Capt. Chris Strickland, a spokesman for the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies issued a warrant for Minter’s arrest on June 14. He turned himself in Tuesday morning, Strickland said. Court records show Minter was released on $50,000 bond around noon the same day.

Minter, 39, of 105 E. Main St. in Clayton had been a teacher in the Johnston County school system since 2010, said district spokeswoman Tracey Peedin Jones. His contract expired June 12, she said.

Jones said she couldn’t go into details about the case. “While the details of the school system’s review are confidential, I can assure you that administration took prompt action to begin our review and report to law enforcement,” she said.
