Why Western? “The coaching experience that they have there was a big factor. They’ve won several conference championships and had a lot of athletes succeed. The campus life is great and the I’m looking forward to being in the mountains.”

Also Considered: UNC Wilmington, Liberty

Plans to Major In: Geology

Notable: Alex finished fifth in the 200-meter dash at the 2013 NCHSAA 2A State Championships. He ran the 100, 200 and 400 outdoors and the 55 and 300 indoors for the Panthers. … At Western, he’ll focus on the 200 and the 400. He enjoys the 400 most of all. “It’s still considered a sprint, but it’s a longer sprint and if you’re good at running the curves, you can really build up speed,” he said. … Alex played baseball up until his high school days but was burnt out on the sport by the time he reached ninth grade. So he decided to give track a try. After a day with the long distance runners on his first day of practice, he shifted to the sprint group and had found his new home. … UNC Wilmington was a school that Alex gave strong consideration to but once the idea of cutting the track and field program from the Seahawks’ sports offerings was brought up, he switched his focus to Western Carolina.
