Community shred event
A community shred event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 20, in the parking lot at Edwards IGA, 721 N. Bright Leaf Blvd., Smithfield. Johnston County Register of Deeds Craig Olive encourages Johnstonians to shred old files, receipts, credit-card offers, bank statements, returned checks and any other sensitive information they want to discard. Civil War symposium
“North Carolina: A Civil War Symposium” will be held Sept. 14-15 at Johnston Community College in Smithfield and at Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.
Saturday’s speakers include historians Mark Bradley and Chris Fonvielle. Sunday will include refreshments and a bus tour of Bentonville Battlefield. Tickets range from $25 to $110. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.fobb.net.
GOP women to meet
The Johnston County Republican Women will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at Festejos Mexican Bar and Grill, 905 E. Main St., Clayton. Dinner will at 6 p.m. Joyce Krawiec, vice chair of the N.C. Walking – A weekly walking program will begin at 8:15 a.m. Thursday, July 11, at the concession stand on the walking trail at Clayton Community Park, 1075 Amelia Church Road.
Bridge class – Starting July 12, a bridge class will meet at 1 p.m. Fridays at the Clayton Senior Activity Center, 303 Dairy Road. All skill levels are welcome. Refreshments and coffee will be available.
DVD on stuttering
“Stuttering and Your Child: Help for Parents,” a DVD, is available at the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield Public Library, 309 E. Market St., Smithfield.
It features experts who address common concerns, such as how to help the child at home and whether to seek the advice of a speech pathologist.
Lamitca Inc. in Selma is offering summer dance classes for ages 3 and older. Registration is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the Women’s Club, 203 Oak St., Selma. The cost is $30.
