College Football Signing: Hisaun Yates

July 15, 2013

Hisaun Yates signs with Ferrum College to play football with (standing, from left) Smithfield-Selma athletic director Chase Crocker, assistant football coach Chris Martin and head football coach David Lawhon.

High school: Smithfield-Selma

Height, weight: 5 feet 11 inches, 190 pounds

Why Ferrum? “I felt like this gave me the best opportunity to be successful at the next level.”

Also considered: Methodist, Catawba, N.C. A&T

Plans to major in: Sports Medicine/Physical Therapy

Notable: Hisaun was a starting linebacker and fullback for Smithfield-Selma and projects to play linebacker at Ferrum. … He wants to improve on “everything” as he gets ready to play at the college level. “I am never satisfied,” Hisaun said. … His most memorable game came early in his senior season where he played an inspired second half after a halftime pep talk from coach David Lawhon.

Smithfield-Selma coach David Lawhon: “Hisaun, is an extremely hard worker. He was always the first one to practice and the last one to leave; one of the strongest kids on our roster. He is a leader on and off the field. Hisaun is deserving of every accolade he has achieved. Ferrum is getting a tremendous student athlete.”
