Joel Leslie Johnson

Joel Leslie Johnson, age 49, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 20, 2013. Born on December 12, 1963 in Wake County, he was a son of John Leslie and Corine Estes Johnson.

Joel graduated from Cary High School and then North Carolina State University with a B.S. degree and Master’s degree. He later received his Doctorate degree from Campbell University School of Pharmacy. He dedicated twenty years to GlaxoSmithKline where he served as the Manager of Clinical Development Cardio Vascular/Metabolic Medicine Development Center. Numerous journals/articles were authored and published by Joel during his tenure. Joel was well respected by his team members at GlaxoSmithKline.

Joel enjoyed spending time with his family and actively serving his community through coaching sports, serving on school advisory boards, serving as PTA officers, and offering support to the community schools. In his free time, he enjoyed working on school projects and numerous hobbies with his children, as well as riding four wheelers, beach cruisers, and taking walks with family and friends. Joel courageously battled his disease for two years, and was able to watch his daughter graduate Clayton High School and start college, and see his son play in many varsity football games for Corinth-Holders High School and achieve his driver’s license. Two of his proudest days were when Jan and Jared accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

In addition to his parents, Joel is survived by his wife of twenty-four years, Nelda Leigh Johnson; son, Jared Charles Johnson; daughter, Leslie Jan Johnson. Joel is also survived by his brother, John Steven Johnson; mother-in-law, Barbara Jeffreys; brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Lynne Britton; nephew, Tyler Britton; and niece, Crystal Britton. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Luther E. and Nellie R. Johnson and grandparents, Ervin M. and Norma K. Estes.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013 in Thanksgiving Baptist Church with Rev. Troy Harris and Rev. Joseph Creech officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Thanksgiving Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Thanksgiving Baptist Church, 6701 NC 42 East, Selma, NC 27576, or Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, 2919 Olive Branch Road, Durham, NC 27703.
