Virginia Pearl Stewart Ferrell

Virginia Pearl Stewart Ferrell, 88, passed away Tuesday, September 24, at Johnston Health following a recent decline in health and a brief hospital stay. Virginia was born September 9, 1925 and was a life-long resident of the Smithfield community. She is preceded in death by her parents John Archie & Amanda Stewart, her beloved husband, John Ervin Ferrell and 11 brothers and sisters.

A graveside funeral service will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive relatives and friends after the service from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the longtime home of Mrs. Ferrell located at 739 NC 210 Highway, Smithfield.

In addition to her children, grandchildren and 2 new great grandchildren, Virginia loved gardening and making quilts. She was a constant fixture performing yard work until a recent decline in health.

She took great pride in the musical talents of husband John, noted guitarist and performer.

In 2003 Virginia penned her autobiography by hand titled “PEARLS FROM MY LIFE.” In the hand written Preface, she wrote…”This Novel is to let my children and grandchildren have a better understanding of my Pa and Ma, my life and my family’s life, my dream house with many more stories and pictures to go with the stories – Also those loving memories of my life.” This book was dedicated…”To the Loving Memory of My Husband John.”

Mrs. Ferrell is survived by three children; Dr. Jimmy Ferrell of South Carolina; Vickie Stephenson and husband M. Durwood Stephenson of Clayton; Pam Killebrew and husband Ricky Killebrew of Smithfield; and 2 granddaughters; April S. Culver and husband Chad Culver of Smithfield; and Natalie Weeks and husband Wade Weeks of Smithfield; and Foster Grandson, David Moore; and two great granddaughters, Ava S. Culver of Smithfield; and Chesnee J. Weeks of Smithfield and several nieces and nephews.

Flowers are welcomed or memorial gifts can be made to SECU Hospice House, c/o Johnston Health Foundation, P.O. Box 1376, Smithfield, NC 27577.

The family expresses its gratitude to the staff and nurses at Johnston Health for their kindness and tender care during their Mother’s recent visits to Johnston Health and to family and friends who have expressed love, support and great food during the brief illness.
