The Johnston County Public Health Department has scheduled the following events and services.
This year’s flu vaccine is available at the health department, 517 N. Bright Leaf Blvd., Smithfield. The health department will offer the shots from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through year’s end.
The county will accept Medicaid, Medicare, Health Choice and Coventry. For those without insurance, the cost is $25 for adults and $15 for children.
A Community Health Forum is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the health department, 517 N. Bright Leaf Blvd., Smithfield. Are you concerned about the health and well-being of your community? What are you major health concerns? Make your concerns known at the forum.
The department’s next childbirth class will begin Thursday, Oct. 17. To register, which is required, call 919-934-8171.
“Living Health with Diabetes,” a free self-management workshop, will begin Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the health department. The workshop will meet from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays for six weeks.

The First Citizens Bank Annual Golf Classic, a fundraiser for the Johnston Health Foundation, will tee off Friday, Oct. 11, at Pine Hollow Golf Course near Clayton. If you would like to play or volunteer to help with the event, call Alison Drain at 919-938-7169.
Want to learn about the advantages of breastfeeding your baby? New parents are invited to a class from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Suite 1404A of the Johnston Medical Mall in Smithfield. Call 919-938-7736 to register. The fee is $30 per couple.
Johnston Health will host Fall Fest, a craft show, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at the Johnston Medical Mall in Smithfield. Shop for Christmas gifts, arts and crafts and home furnishings. For more information, call Shanna Hodges at 919-938-6512.
The second annual Champions 5K and Family Fun Day is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 19, on the front lawn of Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield. The next Ladies Night Out is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Johnston Medical Center in Clayton. Meet doctors, shop with vendors and snack on hors d’oeuvres, all while learning about wellness and breast cancer prevention. For more information, call 938-7186.
Want to learn how to better manage your diabetes? A group class for outpatients will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in Suite 1404A of the Johnston Medical Mall in Smithfield. Participants must have orders from their doctors to attend and must contact the hospital’s scheduling department at 938-7749 for an appointment. Insurance will be filed.
If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes or cancer, you can find information and encouragement in a support group. A diabetes support group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Suite 1702 of the Johnston Medical Mall in Smithfield. Angels Among Us, a cancer support group, will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in Suite 1404A of the Medical Mall.
