Elizabeth Walker Wells Denning died September 25, 2013.
She was one of three children by John Warner Wells and Elizabeth Walker Wells (V). Mrs. Denning was born in Smithfield, North Carolina. Beth attended St. Margaret’s School for Girls in Virginia. She graduated from Peace College in Raleigh and earned her BA in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While in college, Beth was named to the May Court. She made her debut in 1969 with the Terpsichorean Club of Raleigh. In Beth’s younger years she was an avid athlete. She was a talented modern dancer, swimmer, and tennis player.
Beth married her high school sweetheart, Dr. Charles Vance Denning. They began their married life together in Albany, Georgia with the U.S. Navy Dental Corp. and moved to Sanford to start a family. Beth’s deepest passion was the care, love, and well-being of her children and family. Beth had a special way with people and the gift of touching other people’s lives. Her zest for life radiated through everything and everyone she came in contact with.
Beth was very involved and passionate about her community and others in need. Beth never met a stranger and had a genuine concern for the well-being of others. She was actively involved in many charities. She served on the Boards of Directors for the Group Home of Lee County and for the Lee County Humane Society. She was on the Executive Cabinet for Meredith College. She was an active leader in the fundraising campaigns for Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh. She was an active leader in the North Carolina Historical Society.
Throughout her life, Beth had a passion for gardening and flower arranging. She was a long-time member of the Sanford Garden Club. She loved to read and was a loyal member of the Sanford Literary Club. Beth also had a love of fashion and was a model in her younger years.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Vance Denning, two daughters, Elizabeth Walker Fernandez and husband Joseph Alexander Fernandez of Charlotte, and Christine Vance Denning of Chicago IL; two brothers Edward Warner Wells of Columbia, SC and Nicholas Walker Wells of Charlotte; and two grandsons, Jackson and Walker Fernandez. A special recognition to the love and devoted care of Mrs. Sara Cotton.
The family received friends and family at the home on Friday, September 27, 2013.
A graveside celebration of life was held at Buffalo Cemetery on Saturday, September 28, 2013.
