Princeton at Lakewood, 7:30
In all likelihood, the winner here gets a first-round playoff date at home. Second place outright in the Carolina 1A Conference is up for grabs as well. Princeton hasn’t been challenged in its last three, scoring 50 or more in each of the past three weeks. Lakewood had its four-game win streak halted at the hands of the state’s top-ranked 1A team (James Kenan) last week.
South Johnston at Cleveland, 7:30
Cleveland is a win away from clinching the No. 1 playoff seeding from the Two Rivers 3A Conference and no worse than a share of the league championship. But things aren’t going to be easy for the Rams. This week, it’s a meeting with rival South Johnston. The Trojans fell victim to a Western Harnett rally last week, jumbling the playoff picture further. South needs to win out to have a chance at finishing third in the conference.
Clayton at West Johnston, 7
Clayton had its eyes on a third-place finish in the Greater Neuse River 4A Conference and can do just that with wins over West and Southeast in its last two games. First up are the rival Wildcats who roared through a memorable second half to pull away form Southeast last week. The second half West put together will be a big subject of conversation for Clayton this week, especially considering Clayton’s tendency to play better in the first half than the second half so far this season.
If the Wildcats put together another impressive finish, it could spell trouble for the Comets.
Corinth Holders at Smithfield-Selma, 7:30
On paper, Corinth Holders needs to win out to ensure itself of a playoff bid in its first season of 3A play. But if they can get to seven wins, the Pirates are probably playoff bound as a wild card team. The Pirates are a win away from that mark as they prepare for their first meeting with Smithfield-Selma, who must figure out a way to slow down the Pirates’ passing attack.
Southwest Edgecombe at North Johnston, 7:30
Eastern Plans 2A Conference play hasn’t been very kind to either team, although both of Southwest’s losses in the league have been by 13 points or less.
