Grinch Toy Run is Dec. 7

The second annual Grinch Stink Stank Stunk 5K Toy Run will be held Dec. 7 in Smithfield. All participants are asked to bring a new unwrapped toy or gift card. All donations will go to Harbor and the Johnston County DSS Angel Tree project. Prizes will be awarded to runners who dress as a Whoville character. Register at smithfield-nc.com or in person at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. Race packets can be picked up from noon until 7 p.m. on Dec. 6, and toy donations can be dropped off then. The 5K run begins at 10 a.m. and a jog/walk event begins at 10:05 a.m.

Baseball registration

Spring baseball registration with the Smithfield Parks Dept. will begin on Jan. 6 for ages 7-14 (as of May 1, 2014). The fee is $35-70. Practices begin in March and games start in April. Registration closes Feb. 7.

Softball sign-ups

Spring softball registration with the Smithfield Parks Dept. will begin on Jan. 6 for ages 7-14 (as of Jan. 1, 2014). The fee is $30-60. Practices begin in March and games start in April. Registration closes Feb. 7.

T-Ball registration

Registration for T-ball with the Smithfield Parks Dept. opens Feb. 10 for ages 5-6 (as of May 1, 2014). The fee is $30-60 and practices begin in April. Registration closes March 7.

Aquatics, fitness programs

The Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of aquatics classes and fitness programs. Visit SRAConline.com or call 934-1408 for more information. Some of the fitness offerings include Cycling, Zumba, Hip Hop Hustle, Piyo, Turbo Kick, Total Body, Tai Chi, Inferno Cycle, P90X and Cycle Fusion. Harrison Gym open play

Practice your moves, meet your friends, stay active and spend time with your family at the Harrison Gymnasium. Drop in for basketball with no reservations necessary. The court is available on a first-come, first-served basis. You must sign in each time and present a photo ID. Play for ages 18 and over is available Sundays from 4-6 p.m. The cost is $3 per person. Play for ages 55 and older is available on Fridays from 6-8 p.m. There is no charge for the Friday session.
