Doris F. “Dot” Helms, age 82, died Wednesday night in the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. Born July 6, 1931 in Columbus County she was a daughter of the late Charles and Alma Britt Fisher. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Virginia Helms Russell; and sisters, Kaye Fisher, and Virginia Cherry. Dot graduated from Whiteville High School and Watts School of Nursing. She was a nurse for many years, after which she was proud to be a stay at home mom. Dot will be remembered for her generosity to those in need, her love of children, her exuberance for life, and for marching to the beat of her own drum.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 16, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Smithfield with Rev. Lee Colbert officiating.
Surviving are husband of 60 years, Earl Helms of Smithfield; daughter, Janis Helms of Raleigh; grandchildren, Anna Feild Russell of Banner Elk, and Kathryn Helms Russell of Roanoke, VA; and son-in-law, Feild Russell of Banner Elk.
