Hilda Gray Stancil, age 80, of Kenly, NC passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2013 peacefully in her sleep at home.
She was born to the late Madie N. Eatmon and Glenn Eatmon in Bagley, NC. The late Edward Eatmon, her stepfather, was an important and integral part of her life. She was married to the late Reverend Lee N. Stancil for over twenty-five years. During her early childhood, Hilda attended Richard B. Harrison School. She spent a great portion of her early adult life serving as a private caretaker for the sick, babysitting the young and as a domestic worker. Later in life, she went on to receive her high school diploma from Johnston Technical College in 1980. Soon after, she decided to further her formal education at Johnston Technical College by receiving a Certified Nursing Assistant diploma. Hilda was employed at Smithfield Manor Nursing home for over 25 years until her retirement. She was passionate about caring for her patients and often would purchase items for her less fortunate patients to ensure that they were adequately cared for and felt loved. While working at Smithfield Manor Nursing Home, she met a co-worker who later became a lifetime friend, Mrs. Betty Grice. She joined Warren Chapel Original Free Will Baptist Church during her early childhood. Hilda served as an usher and was an ordained mother of the church. She was a founding member of the Sunshine Women Club during its existence. Hilda enjoyed gardening, cooking, helping others and spending time with her family. She was a warm, gentle and compassionate person. She found joy in filling her porch and yard with beautiful flowers and plants. Many people knew for her excellent culinary skills and her openness to share her tasty delights with others. However, most importantly she was servant to humankind and to GOD.
Hilda is survived by her four children, Claudia S. Sherrod of Raleigh, NC, Emanuel L. Stancil (Teresa) of Clayton, NC, Leora S. Owens (Timothy) of Kenly, NC, Shirley A. Stancil of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren, Renee’ L. Pearson of Greenville, NC, Linwood M. Stancil of Kenly, NC, Nathaniel A. Stancil of Clayton, NC; one great-grandchild, Andreika S. Oats of Clayton, NC; one sister, Minnie Brown (Raymond) of Kenly, NC; two first cousins who were like sisters to her, Doris Shaw of Selma, NC, Gracie C. Sanders of Smithfield, NC; four surrogate great-grandchildren, DeTajanea Jones, Tatiyanah Jones, Tamiyah Jones, Savion Best; nephews; nieces; cousins; in-laws and friends.
She was preceded in death by her three sons, Sherwood Stancil, Durwood Stancil and Gregory Stancil.
There was a Christian Wake from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, December 20, 2013 at Warren's Chapel OFWB Church, 5270 Hwy 301 N., Micro, NC.
The funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 21, 2013, at Warren's Chapel OFWB Church, 5270 Hwy. 301 N., Micro, NC. Officiant was Pastor James Perry. Pallbearers and Floral Bearers, were Friends and Family members.
A dinner reception for the family and friends was held immediately after the Funeral and Burial Service.
