Baker’s dozen of local squads in holiday tournaments

High school basketball season quickly winds back up the day after Christmas with 13 area teams taking part in traditaional tournaments or round-robin events from Dec. 26-28 in the area.

The boys teams from Garner and Clayton are in the Shavlik Randolph bracket of the annual Holiday Invitational at Broughton High School in Raleigh.

Garner takes on Wheeler (Ga.) in the first round Thursday, Dec. 26, at 2:30, while Clayton meets Orlando (Fla.) Lake Highland in one of the featured games that night at 7 o’clock.

Lake Highland is led by University of North Carolina recruit Joel Berry, while Cincinnati recruit Gary Clark leads the Comets. Berry, a 6-foot point guard, is one of the top 25 rated players in the class of 2014.

The Garner vs. Wheeler game will feature great young talent. The Trojans’ roster is full of talented underclassmen, while the Wheeler lineup has highly-touted juniors Daniel Giddens (6-foot-8) and Jaylen Brown (6-foot-6).

The championship game for the bracket will be at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Cleveland and Corinth Holders are both hosting two-day holiday events.

The Cleveland Classic, set for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 27-28, will feature a total of 12 teams (six girls, six boys) including West Johnson and Princeton. Nash Central, Rolesville and Rosewood round out the field.

West Johnston takes on Princeton at 3 (girls) and 4:30 (boys) p.m. on Dec. 27, then faces Cleveland in the nightcap games on Dec. 28 at 6 and 7:30. Princeton plays Rosewood in its Dec. 28 games.

The third annual Pirates Holiday Classic at Corinth Holders is also a Dec.27-28 event and features four-team girls and boys tournaments. Corinth Holders, Rocky Mount and East Wake’s boys and girls teams are in the field along with the boys team from Knightdale and North Lenoir’s girls.

Corinth Holders meets the North Lenoir girls in the fist round at 6 p.m. on Friday, while the boys take on East Wake in the night cap. Games begin at 3 p.m. both days with the championship round starting about 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Smithfield-Selma is part of both the boys and girls tournament fields in the Farris and Farris Holiday Tournament at Wilson Hunt from Dec. 26-28. SSS takes on Hunt’s teams in the first round (girls at 6:30, boys at 8) on Thursday. The girls consolsation is at 6 p.m. on Dec. 27, while the championship games are at 6:30 and 8 on Dec. 28.

Clayton’s girls are in a round robin tournament at Heritage High School which is hosted by Athens Drive. The Comets meet Heritage at 8:30 on Dec. 26, Northern Durham at 5:30 on the 27th and Durham Jordan at 5:30 on the 28th.
