Cleveland rules in overtime
Cleveland scored twice in overtime to down Corinth Holders 3-1 in girls soccer on Tuesday night. The Pirates had tied the game with a second-half goal before the Rams scored in both overtime periods.
Courtney Morris, Emily Truelove and Brittany Preston all scored for Cleveland, which stayed unbeaten in the Two Rivers 3A Conference at 4-0. Truelove assisted on the other two Cleveland (6-4-1 overall) goals, while Morris picked up an assist as well.
Katelyn Lowery made 14 saves in goal for the Rams.
South stops Clayton
South Johnston downed Clayton 12-2 in six innings of softball Monday night. The two teams combined for nine doubles during the contest. South Johnston had six of them.
Madison Byrd went 2-for-2 (both doubles) and Kayla Allen was 2-for-3 with a double for the Trojans.
Lauren Higgins limited the Comets to three hits on the night.
The Trojans beat Western Harnett 9-1 on Tuesday behind a three-hitter from Dinalee Spell. Alexis Massengill homered and had two other hits for the Trojans in the win, while Anna Webster went 3-for-3 with a double. Higgins was 2-for-4.
Pirates clinch Two Rivers 3A tennis title
Corinth Holders downed Cleveland in boys tennis on back-to-back days to wrap up the Two Rivers 3A Conference dual team title. The Pirates are 8-0 with the tiebreaker over second-place Cleveland with just two dual matches left in the regular season.
Corinth Holders swept singles play in Wednesday’s match. Christian Green and Braxton Brewington had the Pirates’ singles victory.
Wildcats score late to sweep Cleveland
West Johnston took a softball and baseball double dip from rival Cleveland Monday, scoring late in both games to clinch the victories.
West scored two runs in the sixth to win the baseball game, 2-1. The two teams combined for just nine hits on the night.
In softball, West took a 2-0 lead early then came back with two insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Junior Rachel Willis and freshman Nadia Blevins were both 3-for-4 with two RBIs each for the Wildcats in the win. Pitcher Megan Mills struck out 12 and didn’t issue a walk in collecting the victory.
Bulldogs still perfect in league softball play
Princeton remained unbeaten in Carolina 1A Conference softball play with a 18-0 win over Lakewood Tuesday. Taylor Carroll was 4-for-5 with six RBIs and two triples for Princeton in the win. Hailey Wood also tripled for the Bulldogs.
Princeton fell to Southern Wayne in non-conference action 2-1 on Monday.
Lakewood nipped Princeton 7-6 in baseball. Nick Phillips was 3-for-4 in the loss for the Bulldogs.
South Johnston nips Western Harnett
South Johnston pushed across a run in the seventh to top Western Harnett 7-6 in baseball Tuesday. Cody Allen was 3-for-4 for the Trojans, while Joseph Johnson hit a two-run home run and struck out 12. Colby Jones came on in relief in the seventh to get the victory.
South stands 2-1 in Two Rivers 3A Conference play and 6-4 overall after the win.
Triton sweeps Smithfield-Selma
Triton swept a baseball, softball and girls soccer grouping from Smithfield-Selma Tuesday night in a battle of Two Rivers 3A Conference rivals.
The Hawks won in softball 13-3 and in soccer, 3-0.
SSS fell 6-4 in baseball. Chris Parker had three hits for the Spartans in the loss and Chris Simonson drove in three runs with two hits.
South claims first soccer win
South Johnston rallied for a 2-1 girls soccer victory over Western Harnett Tuesday night after falling behind in the first five minutes of play. Freshman Sarah Rodriguez scored off of a Katie Hodges pass to pull the Trojans even.
Taylor Creech drew a foul after a great run through the penalty box in the second half and was fouled, setting up the game-winning penalty kick goal by senior Dava McLamb.
South moved to 1-1 in Two Rivers 3A Conference play and 1-4 overall with the win.
Princeton sweeps track wins
Princeton swept a four-team Carolina 1A Conference track meet on Monday with Spring Creek, James Kenan and Neuse Charter. The Bulldog girls totaled 106 points to win by 62; the boys team had 87 points, 30 ahead of Spring Creek.
The Bulldogs totaled 13 event wins on the afternoon.
Velazquez’s hat trick keys Bulldogs
Princeton moved to 5-0 in Carolina 1A Conference girls soccer play with a 6-0 victory over Lakewood Tuesday. Kassandra Velasquez scored three goals for the Bulldogs (6-1 overall) in the win.
Chelsea Hawley added a pair of goals and Jessica Brush scored as well.
