June 6, 2014

Josh Banflavy signs with Old Dominion University football with his mom (seated) Sandi, (standing, from left) West Johnston athletic director Warren Singleton and football coach Jimmy Williams.

Parents: John and Sandi Banflavy

High School: West Johnston

Height, Weight: 6-foot-4, 250 pounds

Position: Tight End/H-Back

Also Considered: Lenoir-Rhyne, Catawba

Why ODU? “The coaches were great. The football program felt like home and I liked the campus and athletic facilities. The fact that it’s near the beach didn’t hurt either.”

Major: Sports Management

Notable: Josh has played a little bit of everything during his four-year varsity career for the Wildcats. Among those positions: defensive end, middle linebacker, nose guard, nose tackle, offensive guard, tight end and fullback. He’ll take on the H-back role (i.e. a tight end in the backfield) at ODU in a Auburn-type offense. “It excites me because I’ve always liked having the chance to catch the ball and run with it,” he said. … Among his more memorable football moments: the first time he was in a photo in game action in the News & Observer. … He wants to improve his speed at the college level. … Josh is used to performing at West Johnston and not just on the football field. He was Uncle Henry and General Winkie in the school’s production of the “Wizard of Oz” this spring. He’s been singing since the fifth grade and is a member of the church band at Highland Baptist Church.
