Teams from Four Oaks Elementary School placed first in their region in the N.C. Science Olympiad.
The competition, held at Erwin Elementary School in Erwin, drew 11 teams from Johnston, Harnett, Wake and Cumberland counties. Four Oaks won both the varsity and junior varsity competitions.
Members of the varsity team were Raiden Simmons, Justin Parker, Courtney Lassiter, Santiago Franco, Simon Upchurch, Jacob Ellis, Ian Autry, Tyler Allen, Brandon Cortez, Mark Cuppett, Megan Beasley, Joel Aguilar, Jacob Bradshaw, Jasmine Diaz and Skylar Eltz
The varsity team earned gold medals in Ecology Expert, Fossil Frenzy, Genes-R-Us, Super Sleuths, Trajeggtory and Weather Permitting. The team brought home silver medals in Backyard Biologist, Bone & Brawn, Junk Box Build-Off and The Heat Is On. It won bronze medals in Data Crunchers and What’s the Matter?
Members of the JV team were Cristian Olivares, Cooper Gardner, Jacob Smith, Meagan Worley, Christian Worrell, Julissa Rodriguez, Taylor Vega, Cody Bates, Matthew Allen, Dylan Hyer, Lance Philley, Christopher Mooring, Yaniah Ward and Connor Roberts.
The junior varsity team earned gold medals in Backyard Biologist, Genes-R-Us, Junk Box Build-Off, The Heat Is On and Work It Out. It brought home silver medals in Bones and Brawn, Fossil Frenzy, Weather Permitting and Trajeggtory. The team won bronze medals in Super Sleuths; Ecology Expert; Describe It, Build It; Data Crunchers; Bridge-a-Roni; and What’s the Matter?
Four Oaks Elementary teacher Laura Fite led the team. Trainers Melissa Illian, Dave Diviak, Matthew Morris, Amanda Hedrick, Katrina McDougald, Kim McLamb, Michelle Vega, Sandy Smith, Jennifer Hale, Amy Cuppett, Ryan Ziegler and Lindsey Stilley.
