Susan Wise Harris

July 13, 2014

Susan Wise Harris of Raleigh died on July 8th at her home, her family at her side. She had been in declining health. Susan was born in Richmond, Virginia, the eldest daughter of Henry and Virginia Harris, who are deceased. She grew up in Rocky Mount, attended St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh, and trained in accounting at Draughn's Business College in Nashville, Tennessee. She lived in Washington DC for several years before coming back to North Carolina. Susan is survived by her beloved son, Tim Harris of Raleigh, and his partner, Gia Lindhardt, and two grandchildren, Jordan Harris and Irie Harris. She is also survived by her sister, Ginny Kurth, her brother-in-law, Richard Kurth, her nephews, Henry and Richard, all of Raleigh, her uncle, Sterling Harris, her cousins, Jack, Jim, and Roger, and their families. She was predeceased by her brother, Bill Harris, of Los Angeles. Susan was a voracious reader, a lover of words. She also was a lover of nature, and of all creatures great and small. May she now be at peace. For those who wish to remember Susan, the family asks that contributions be made in her name to the Wake County Library System or to Transitions Life Care, formerly Hospice of Wake County, for whose wisdom, empathy and kindness we are most grateful. The family plans to have a gathering in Susan's memory for family and friends later in the summer.
